Page 4: History

The ideas on this webpage start with my parents, Robert and Clara (Sund) Steffen. Dad was the farm manager for Father Flanagan at Boys Town for thirty years and a leader in developing commercial-scale organic farming methods in the Midwest. My grandfather, Henry Sund helped my folks buy our two small farms.

In later life Mom and Dad moved to their Bennington farm where Dad raised Biodynamic grain for specialty millers and fresh produce for local restaurants in Omaha. They rented their Massena, Iowa pasture to a local cow-calf farmer.

I am working with the current operators to expand pasture-based organic production for regional organic commodity and retail markets.

Dad introduced me to many holistic thinkers, including E.F. ShumacherWendell Berry and Alan Savory. More recently my reading on the economic potential of local food systems includes Woody Tasch (Slow Money), Michael Shuman (Local Dollars, Local Sense) and Martin Sandbu (The Economics of Belonging).
